Strong start from Sabathia gives Yanks 8-4 win over Tigers
Much like the weather in Detroit, the Yankees offense went cold in game one of the first road trip of the year. C.C. Sabathia (6-10, 4.73 ERA in 2015) will toe the rubber for his first start of the year and he’ll try to be the Yankees first pitcher to last six innings in 2016.Tigers lineup. On the other side, veteran Mike Pelfrey (6-11, 4.26 ERA in 2015) will be making his Tigers debut.

Alex Rodriguez crushed a 92 mph fastball off of Mike Pelfrey for his first home run of the season and gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead. C.C. Sabathia looked good in the first, striking out Justin Upton and setting down the Tigers 1-2-3.
2nd Inning
Brian McCann narrowly beat the shift with a single to right field, later advancing to second on a passed ball and then to third on Carlos Beltrans fielders choice. Didi Gregorius slapped an opposite field single to score Brian McCann and make the score 2-0. Sabathia again set the Tigers down in order.
3rd Inning
Both teams went down in order.
4th Inning
Brian McCann worked a walk and Carlos Beltran beat the shift with an opposite field single. Starlin Castro lined one to right fielder J.D Martinez who dropped the ball, which allowed the bases to become loaded with one out. Didi Gregorius had a sac fly which scored Brian McCann to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. Ronald Torreyes got on with an infield single. Jacoby Ellsbury forced Mike Pelfrey out of the game after he smashed a triple to the right center gap, clearing the bases and giving New York the 6-0 lead. C.C Sabathia walked three batters in a row to start the 4th and gave up a two-out single to James McCann, making the score 6-2.
5th Inning
Brian McCann had a single up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball. Carlos Beltran then crushed a pitch right down the middle into the right field seats making it 8-2.
A walk to Anthony Gose and an infield single from Kinsler had things looking bleak for C.C, but a great double play bailed him out.
6th Inning
Besides a Brett Gardner single, the Yankees were quiet in the 6th. Sabathia settled down after two shaky innings and set the Tigers down in order.
7th Inning
Starlin Castro led off the 7th with a single to right field, the 1,000th hit of his career. Jose Iglesias got a base hit up the middle, knocking C.C out of the game. Kirby Yates came on for relief and gave up a single to Mike Aviles. After an error by Brett Gardner and wild pitch, Iglesias scored making it a 8-3 game. Ian Kinsler got a ground out that scored Aviles, bringing the score to 8-4. Yates got taken out after Justin Upton hit a two out double. Chasen Shreve came on and got Miggy to ground out.
8th Inning
Besides two walks, the Yankees went quietly in the top of the 8th. Dellin Betances came out for the bottom half of the inning and worked a scoreless frame.
9th Inning
The Yankees went down in order in the 9th. Andrew Miller came on to close it out and sealed the victory for the Yanks.
FINAL SCORE: Yankees 8 @ Tigers 4
Conclusion
This was a great game for the Bombers in a few ways. C.C. Sabathia went into the 7th inning, providing the Yankees with some greatly needed length. The lineup got over their temporary slump from yesterday’s game as they broke out for eight runs and 14 hits. Backup infielder Ronald Torreyes had three hits, which is encouraging to see. The Yankees will go for their second series win this season when they face Justin Verlander on Sunday Night Baseball tomorrow.
