Mark Canha's 2-out single in the 11th inning gives Athletics 3-2 win

The Yankees came off a 4-3 win on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners to avoid a 3-game sweep over the weekend. Masahiro Tanaka went seven innings, the first time a Yankee pitcher has done so this season, and Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller struck out all six batters that they combined to face to close out the game. Alex Rodriguez finally ended his slump and drilled a 2-run home run to left in the first inning off of Hisashi Iwakuma. Tonight, the Yankees start a 3-game series against the Oakland Athletics, their second straight AL West opponent. The Yankees will send Michael Pineda, Nathan Eovaldi, and Luis Severino out to the mound to face the Oakland A’s to try and gain a few games back on their AL East counterparts. The Yankees must hit with RISP if they wish to build a winning streak.

 Innings 1-3
Alex Rodriguez’s 2-out single with Carlos Beltran on second gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. However, the Athletics came right back in the top of the 2nd and tied the game at 1 on Marcus Semien’s RBI single, scoring Jed Lowrie. Both teams put a runner on base but failed to score.
Innings 4-6
Neither team threatened in the 4th. In the bottom of the 5th, after Brett Gardner walked and Starlin Castro doubled to left with one out, Carlos Beltran hit a sacrifice fly and the Yankees regained the lead at 2-1. But the Athletics came back in the top of the 6th just like they did earlier; Jed Lowrie’s single with Danny Valencia on third from a triple to lead off the inning tied the game at 2. The Yankees were able to get runners on first and second with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th but Marc Rzepczynski got Brett Gardner to line out and the 6th inning was over.
Innings 7-9
Chasen Shreve, Dellin Betances, and Andrew Miller combined for 3 scoreless innings and the Athletics never truly threatened. The Athletics were able to get men on first and second against Betances but could not score in the 8th. The Yankees put the game-winning run on first when Headley singled to lead off the 9th, but he was caught stealing and the game went into extra innings.
10th Inning
Both teams went 3-up, 3-down. Johnny Barbato came in for Miller for the 10th.
11th Inning
After Jed Lowrie doubled against Barbato with one out, Mark Canha singled him home from third base with two outs, and the Athletics regained the lead at 3-2. In the bottom of the 11th, Ryan Madson entered and set the Yankees down in order and the Athletics won 3-2.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
