New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers Series Preview

Fresh off a series win against the Houston Astros, the New York Yankees will hit the road to face the retooled Detroit Tigers. The Bombers had a solid record against Detroit last season, with five wins and two losses. They’ll look to carry the momentum as they embark on the first road trip of the season.

Keys for a Series Victory
  1. Keep the offense rolling. The Yankees broke out of spring training in a big way against the Astros, smashing seven home runs and scoring 27 runs. Starlin Castro and Mark Teixeira fueled the offensive onslaught, as the duo were responsible for 15 RBI’s and four homers.
  2. Bullpen dominance. An obvious key to the Yankees success last season, there were questions surrounding members of this year’s bullpen. After not allowing a run in 11 innings the bullpen, led by Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller, looks ready to roll.
  3. Limit the Tigers Power Hitters. The Tigers have quite an impressive group of 1-4 hitters. Here’s a quick rundown: The contact machine Ian Kinsler, power hitting Justin Upton, Miguel Cabrera (enough said), and rising star J.D Martinez. This group is obviously capable of pounding the ball, and the Yankees must be careful when facing them.
Game 1: Jordan Zimmermann vs. Luis Severino
Luis Severino will make his 2016 debut when he faces the Tigers for the first time in his young career. Last season Severino was a revelation for the Yankees, as fans got a taste of what he can offer as he went 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA. The Yankees are expecting big things from the 22-year-old righty and by season’s end, he could be their best pitcher.

One of the Tigers big offseason acquisitions, Jordan Zimmermann will be making his Motown debut against the Yankees. Zimmermann had one start against the Yankees last season, pitching well in seven innings of work, racking up seven K’s and allowing two earned runs.

Game 2: Mike Pelfrey vs. C.C Sabathia
The Yankees 5th starter, C.C Sabathia will be toeing the rubber for his 2016 debut. After a rough spring training, Sabathia is eager to prove that he still has what it takes to be an effective major league starter. The big lefty did well in his lone start against Detroit last season, tossing eight innings and striking out five.

Mike Pelfrey is a guy who always seem to latch onto a team and become surprisingly effective. His latest team is the Tigers and he’ll look to continue his run of being a dependable swingman. The Yankees should have no trouble matching up against him.

Game 3: Justin Verlander vs. Masahiro Tanaka
Coming off a satisfactory opening day performance, Masahiro Tanaka will take the mound for his second start of the season. Last season Tanaka had a tough time figuring out Detroit’s lineup, allowing 13 hits in 11 innings while serving up three homers and six earned runs. For Tanaka to have success against the Tigers lineup, it will be crucial for him to limit giving up home runs.

Justin Verlander got rocked in his lone start against the Yankees last season. The former ace gave up six earned runs in six innings (and A-Rod’s 3,000th hit). Here’s something you’d never guess: Justin Verlander hasn’t beat the Yankees since 2012.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
