BREAKING: Yankees acquire IF Rougned Odor from the Texas Rangers
The New York Yankees have acquired IF Rougned Odor from the Texas Rangers for outfield prospects Antonio Cabello and Josh Stowers. The news was first broken by ESPN’s Jeff Passan this afternoon. Passan also notes that the Rangers will be assuming the majority of the money owed to Odor ($27 million) through the 2022 season plus a buyout on a 2023 option. Joel Sherman of the New York Post was the first to report the prospects going to Texas in the deal.

Texas is expected to absorb almost the entirety of the $27 million owed to Rougned Odor, who’s on his way to the Yankees, per sources. He’s due $12 million this year, $12 million next year and a $3 million buyout on a $13 million club option in 2023.

Odor has struggled to hit consistently over the past four seasons, slashing just .215/.279/.697 with a 77 OPS+ over that stretch, however, his OPS is buoyed by 88 home runs over that stretch, including 30 home run campaigns in 2017 and 2019.
Per multiple reports, the Rangers will be covering 100% of Odor's pay this year which reduces the Yankees' tax-hit to $0. Rostering Odor and having Texas pay his entire salary would actually reduce New York's CBT hit in 2021 since his $0 figure would replace even at worse a player making the Major League minimum.
It’s not yet clear if this
acquisition is in response to a pending injury announcement or just a bench
addition. If the latter, expect Tyler
Wade to be optioned to the alternate site to make room for Odor.
