Weekly Preview: ATL @ NYY 4/20-4/21, NYY @ CLE 4/22-4/25

Another interesting week is in the books for the New York Yankees, who now have the worst record in the American League at 5-10. This is their worst start since 1997 (the only year they didn’t win the World Series within the 5 year span from 1996-2000).

This week, the Braves make their way to the Bronx for a two game set before the Bombers travel west for a four game weekend series in Cleveland. 


After the past week and the struggles the Yankees have had, they need a big morale and performance boost against the Braves and Indians. 


The offense for the Yankees has been well below average. They have continued to not be able to hit with runners in scoring position. Things need to change for the Bombers quickly before they get out of hand.

Jameson Taillon (0-1, 7.56 ERA) vs. Charlie Morton (1-1, 4.76 ERA)

NYY @ CLE:

Game 1: Thursday, April 22 | First Pitch: 6:10pm | TV: YES Network

Domingo German (0-2, 9.00 ERA) vs. Aaron Civale (3-0, 2.18 ERA)

Game 2: Friday, April 23 | First Pitch: 7:10pm | TV: YES Network

Jordan Montgomery (1-1, 4.24 ERA) vs. Logan Allen (1-2, 4.50 ERA) 

Game 3: Saturday, April 24 | First Pitch: 6:10pm | TV: YES Network

Gerrit Cole (2-1, 1.82 ERA) vs. Shane Bieber (2-1, 2.45 ERA)

Game 4: Sunday, April 25 | First Pitch: 1:10pm | TV: YES Network

TBD vs. Triston McKenzie (0-0, 3.55 ERA)  

Taillon and Kluber have each been below average within their first few starts. The Yankees staff needs these two to really step it up when the Braves come to town. The Braves come into the series with the bats on fire. They have won three of their last four and hit 4 homeruns in the first inning on Sunday against the Cubs. If Taillon and Kluber can neutralize these bats a bit, it will be a huge success for the Bombers. 


We will see Domingo German again against the Indians, who had a 9.00 ERA through his first two starts before being sent to the alternate site. German will pitch on Thursday in the series opener and it would be a huge lift for this rotation if he could deliver a good outing. Jordan Montgomery gets game 2, and Gerrit Cole takes the hill in game three.


No matter what the pitchers do, the Yankees cannot win if they don’t score, and they haven’t been scoring. Clutch hitting with runners in scoring position is nowhere to be found. This has been a problem for a while, and has kept the Bombers from being successful in the playoffs. It’s obviously still very early in the season, but the bats really need to get going soon to keep the Yankees on a playoff pace, which they truly are not on right now. 


The Yankees really need a step in the right direction this week. If pitching can be better and the bats can find some life and they can pick up some wins, things can turn around very fast and fan reaction will begin to change. People are not happy with what they are seeing from the Yankees recently, and the Yankees are obviously not happy with themselves either. This week is a great opportunity for the Bombers to turn back into the team everyone knows that they can be.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
