Torreyes homers, Sabathia shuts down Rays in Yankees first win of the season
Coming
off a disappointing 7-3 Opening Day loss, the Yankees took on the Rays in game
two of a three game set on Tuesday night. The team sent CC Sabathia to the hill
to square off against Jake Odorizzi from the Rays. Ronald Torreyes hit the team's first homer of the season, and Sabathia pitched very well
across five innings getting his and the team's first victory of the season in a
5-0 win.

The Yankees struck early with a three run third inning thanks to a long home run from Ronald Torreyes. As the first Yankee homer of the season, Torreyes' blast put the Yankees ahead for good, giving them a 2-0 lead. The Yankees were then given a lucky break as Matt Holliday hit a high pop up that was lost in the roof of the Trop by left fielder Peter Pourjos falling in for an RBI double.
Sabathia
threw well across five innings giving up just three hits while striking out two
and walking two. He picked up his first win of the season giving the Yankees a
much needed boost in game two of the season.
Chase
Headley would hit his first home run of the season in the top of the sixth
inning to give the Yankees a 4-0 lead. Bryan Mitchell relieved Sabathia in the
sixth inning and got through it unscathed. He was then lifted for Tyler
Clippard who pitched a strong seventh inning picking up two strikeouts.
The
Yankees scored their fifth run in the eighth inning on a Headley single, which
scored Jacoby Ellsbury. The Yankees then sent Jonathan Holder out to pitch, and
he was roughed up a bit allowing two hits as he recorded just one out via a
strikeout. Dellin Betances then entered the game and walked the first batter he
saw to load the bases with nobody out. However, he got out of the jam thanks to
a strikeout and groundout to end the inning. Aroldis Chapman slammed the door
in the ninth inning picking up two strikeouts to end the game.
The
Yankees will play the series finale tomorrow with the first pitch at 7:10 PM
ET. Michael Pineda will make his season debut again Alex Cobb from the Rays.
The Bombers will look to salvage two of three games in their first series of
the new season.
