Cessa's gem not enough as Yankees drop finale
Luis Cessa pitched
extremely well for the Yankees, only surrendering one run in six strong innings
of work. Unfortunately, the offense wasn’t able to solve rookie pitcher Blake
Snell, as the Bombers were shut out in a 2-0 heartbreaker. The Yankees failed
to secure a sweep, which is something the team has struggled with all season long.
With only ten games to go in the regular season, every game is crucial as there
are still three teams that stand between New York and a wild card berth.

Cessa did everything he
could to keep his team in the game. He gave up only six hits, and allowed
single runs in the first and sixth innings. The last run he surrendered was a
solo homer to Corey Dickerson. The long ball has been Cessa’s Achilles heel in
his limited starts this season. With that in mind, he did his job; he gave his
team a chance to win the game.
The offense had plenty of
opportunities to score runs tonight, but couldn’t capitalize on their chances.
In the first two innings alone, the team went 0-for-5 with RISP. As a team, the
Yankees went 0-for-7 with RISP and left ten men on base. Gary Sanchez, who had
homered in each of the past four games, had a quiet night at the plate. He went
0-for-2, but did draw a pair of walks. Behind the plate, Sanchez picked a
runner off second and caught Curt Casali trying to steal. Blake Snell, Chase
Whitley, and Alex Colome combined for the shutout for Tampa Bay.
Tomorrow, the Yankees
start a crucial four-game tilt with division rival and wild card-leading
Toronto Blue Jays. Bryan Mitchell (1-1, 6.00 ERA) will go for the Yankees
against Francisco Liriano (7-13, 5.08 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:07 PM ET.
