Yankees win sixth in a row, move to one game out of wild card

The Yankees stayed hot in a big win, their sixth in a row, over the Rays by a score of 7-5. In the bottom of the fourth inning after a short rain delay, Mark Teixeira extended a 3-2 lead to 7-2 with a grand slam after Rob Refsnyder and Gary Sanchez hit back to back singles followed by Starlin Castro’s walk. This put the game out of reach as the Rays were not able to overcome the deficit.

Gary Sanchez had yet another big day going 2-4 with a solo home run, his 12th since he was called up at the beginning of August, and a single. He was able to show off his arm again in the top of the fourth inning with two outs and a runner on second, throwing behind Corey Dickerson to pick him off at second and end the inning.

Michael Pineda started the game and looked good other than two mistakes in the third inning that were hit by Logan Morrison and Steven Souza Jr for back to back home runs which made the game 3-2 before the rain delay. Pineda’s final line was four and two thirds innings pitched, six hits allowed, two earned runs, and seven strikeouts.

The Rays were able to put up two runs in the top of the sixth. Souza Jr singled to score Logan Morrison who led the inning off with a double, and after Souza advanced to second on a wild pitch, he scored when Bobby Wilson singled him in.

The bullpen did its job of keeping the Rays quiet, other than the two runs in the sixth and a small one run rally in the ninth. Chasen Shreve replaced Pineda in the fifth. The Rays saw five different pitchers out of the Yankees bullpen, all of them combining for four and one third innings pitched, 6 hits, 3 earned runs, and 5 strikeouts.

With the Orioles losing to the Tigers, that puts the Yankees only one game out of the second wild card spot behind both the Orioles and the Tigers who are now tied for the spot. The Yankees send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound to face off against Chris Archer in game three of their four game series against the Rays.
