BBB Top Prospect Countdown #21: Hoy Jun Park
In the July of 2014, when
the Yankees were spending big in the international market, the Yankees snatched
up Korean shortstop Hoy Jun Park for a smooth $1.2 million bonus. Born in
Seoul, South Korea, the 19-year-old shortstop has now one season overseas under
his belt as he played the 2015 season with the rookie level Pulaski Yankees
located in Pulaski, Virginia.

Breakdown
At 6’ 1”, 175 LBS, Park
had a solid year in Pulaski, hitting .239 with five home runs and 30 RBIs in 56
games. Despite a low batting average, Park’s on base percentage was .351 due to
drawing a lot of walks. Park’s season
ended up landing on Baseball America’s Top 20 prospects in the Appalachian
League at number 12. Park’s left handed swing could generate a power boost in
Yankee Stadium if he ever so happens to reach the Bronx.
Projection
I expect Park to either
start 2016 back in Pulaski or to be bumped up to Low-A Charleston. At only 19
years old, Park has time to grow and improve and it will be nice to see him
take steps forward this upcoming season. Hopefully he can raise his batting
average and clean up his fielding a little more as he only had a .935 fielding
percentage in 2015. The Yankees have many shortstop projects, including Jorge
Mateo, but keep an eye out on Hoy Jun Park as he matures on the baseball
diamond.
