Yankees Make Just One Move at Deadline
The
July 31st trade deadline for the Yankees was anticlimactic if you
had to attach one word to describe it. The team acquired Dustin Ackley, who
is much better than people think, but that was all Brian Cashman could spin
off.
There
had been a lot of buzz and speculation all afternoon about what the Yankees
might do throughout the day. The primary target was Craig Kimbrel from the
Padres, but it ultimately didn’t work out.
Just
a few days ago, the Padres offered Craig Kimbrel for Ben Gamel, who is having a
good year in triple-A Scranton and the team’s number four overall prospect, SS
Jorge Mateo. Not wanting to gut the farm for a reliever, Cashman declined.
However,
Cashman decided he’d give it a go one last time on July 31st, but to
his dismay, he never heard back from the Padres. Padres GM A.J. Preller had
made the executive decision to not “sell” at the deadline as he still believes
his team has a chance to make the postseason. A team with multiple rumors
regarding a few players, the Padres didn’t trade anyone of importance to their
stretch-run.
There
were murmurs of the flame throwing “Cuban Missile” Aroldis Chapman being named
in a few Reds and Yankees rumors. Again, the rumors were just that, rumors, as
they didn’t amount to much.
Then,
there were further rumors that the Yankees were strongly looking into setup man
for the Miami Marlins, Carter Capps. You may know Capps by his unorthodox
delivery, but he has been dominant in 2015. This was a guy I would’ve loved to
see in pinstripes but he too wasn’t dealt to any team.
All
in all, the July 31st as whole was anticlimactic. Most moves were
made just a few days earlier so the market was already thin but there were
solid players out there. Most of the rumors fell through as there weren’t many
blockbuster deals made on the final day where teams could make trades (before
the waiver period in August).
