Yankees All-Star Game Recap

Angels CF Mike Trout of the American League led off the All-Star Game with a liner into the right field stands for a leadoff home run. Cardinals shortstop Johnny Peralta of the NL tied the game at 1 after he singled home Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt. The American League took the lead 3-1 in the top of the 5th when Texas DH Prince Fielder, with 2 out and against Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw, singled home Trout. Then, Lorenzo Cain doubled home Pujols. Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen homered in the 6th to cut the NL deficit to 3-2. The AL added two runs in the 7th and led 5-2 when Machado doubled home Brock Holt and scored on a Prince Fielder sacrifice fly. Dozier’s HR (American League) and a NL sac fly in the bottom of the 9th added one run for each team. The American League won 6-3 and secured home field advantage for the World Series.


Brett Gardner (0-2, 2 K)
Brett Gardner entered in the 5th inning to replace Orioles LF Adam Jones and faced Clayton Kershaw with men on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. On the 1-2 pitch, Kershaw dropped one of his best curveballs of the night into the strike zone and Gardner went down looking. He stayed in the game as the LF. In the 7th, Gardner moved to CF once Holt entered and played LF.

Mark Teixeira (0-2, K)
Mark Teixeira entered the game in the bottom of the 6th to play 1B, as the defensive replacement for Albert Pujols. He then saved an error when Todd Frazier grounded out to third, diving to catch the ball and keep his foot on the bag. However, he was unable to save Orioles RP Zach Britton’s throw to first in Paul Goldschmidt’s at bat. He came to bat in the top of the 7th, against Brewers RP Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod) with Machado on 2nd and none out. He grounded out to second base (into the shift) but did do his job by advancing Holt to third with one out. Fielder hit a sac fly to center that scored Machado so Teixeira’s efforts paid off. In the 8th, he faced Reds RP Aroldis Chapman but struck out.

Dellin Betances (1.0 IP, 0 H, K, BB)
Dellin Betances entered in the bottom of 7th. The American League had a 5-2 lead and were 9 outs away from securing home-field advantage in the World Series. He faced Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford first, and on the 1-0 pitch, he hit a deeeeep fly ball to right that was juuuuust foul. Crawford was then retired on a sharp groundout to Indians 2B Jason Kipnis. Next up was Kris Bryant of the Cubs. On a 3-2 pitch, he walked Bryant on a fastball that was just low. Giants 2B Joe Panik was next. Betances struck out Panik on a 1-2 knuckle curve. Diamondbacks CF AJ Pollock grounded out on a high bouncer to Machado, who threw out Pollock.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George. Sure little rumors have serviced here or there about them maybe pursuing Zach Greinke who has recently opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that move reeks of the move CC Sabathia pulled in opting out of his contract with the Yankees a few years back to simply restructure his contract and make a better payday.   However, instances like CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka are why I believe the Yankees aren’t going to shell out big money and a long term contract for a big name starter this year. No team in baseball history has a story quite like the Yankees. 27 times they’ve found baseball Nirvana which is 16 more than the next closest team (Cardinals). 40 times have the Yankees won the American League, and that is also a major league record. The franchise won four straight championships from 1936-1939 and five straight from 1949-1953, a task no other team has ever accomplished.
