Yankees fall 4-3 in 10 Innings in Series Opener
The
Yankees faced off against the Oakland Athletics Tuesday coming off of an off
day and an 8-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. Nathan Eovaldi was on the
hill starting for the Yankees facing off against the dominant Sonny Gray. The
Yankees fell short 4-3 in 10 innings.
The
A's scored first in the top of the first when Josh Reddick singled into center,
scoring Stephen Vogt after he singled and advanced to second on a groundout.
The
Yankees answered quickly when Brett Gardner led off the bottom of the first
with a single. Chase Headley then walked on 4 pitches. Alex Rodriguez just missed a pitch, flying
out to center and leaving the runners on first and second, but Brian McCann
came through with a bloop single to left scoring Gardner. Then Garrett Jones
singled to right to score Headley giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
The
A's tied the game up in the top of the 3rd leading off the inning with 3
straight singles. The score was 2-2 with runners on the corners and no outs.
Eovaldi came through with a big strikeout, then Stephen Drew turned a big 4-6-3
double play to end the threat.
The
Yankees took the lead back in the 4th on a Didi Gregorius RBI single. McCann
walked to lead off the inning then Garrett Jones singled again, advancing him
to second. Chris Young grounded into a double play moving McCann to third with
2 outs. Gregorius came through with 2 outs, singling to left to score McCann and
give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.
Eovaldi
came out after throwing 86 pitches in 5 1/3 innings giving up 6 hits, 2 earned
runs, striking out 4 and walking 1. Chasen Shreve came in to relieve, giving up
a solo home run in the bottom of the 6th to Billy Butler tying the game back up
at 3.
Adam
Warren then came in for the 7th to shut down the A's just like Justin Wilson did
in the 8th and Dellin Betances in the 9th.
Betances
came back in for the 10th inning. Brett Lawrie led off extra innings with a
home run into the left field stands to give the Athletics the 4-3 lead.
The
Yankees could not come through in the 10th even though they got Gardner and
A-Rod on base by walks. Teixeira struck out swinging with runners on first and
second the end the game. The Yankees lost 4-3 in 10 innings.
