Brian McCann’s Walk Off HR Gives New York the 12-Inning Win

The Yankees left Yankee Stadium on Friday night following their first walk-off win of the season on a Brian McCann home run.


Yankees 7-5 (F/12)
Tampa Bay started quickly after Tanaka allowed the leadoff batter in the first, Grady Sizemore, to double and gave Butler a free pass to first on a walk. Longoria’s double to left and Loney’s sac fly gave the Rays a 2-0 lead. Archer shut down the Yankees through 6.2 IP. In the top of the 5th, Kevin Kiermaier tripled to lead off the inning, and the Rays catcher Rene Rivera hit a sac fly that extended the Rays lead to 3-0. At this point, it looked like New York was not going to catch up. They provided very little offense for Tanaka. Tanaka exited after six innings, and it was still a quality start for him since he allowed only 3 ER in 6 IP.

In the 8th, Kevin Jepsen took over for the Rays. After Headley and A-Rod hit back to back singles, Teixeira stepped up. And on a 1-0 count, he dumped Jepsen’s pitch into the right field stands, tying the game at 3.
Betances and Wilson shut down the Rays in the 9th and part of the 10th, and Adam Warren helped the Yankees keep the Rays off the board through the end of the 10th and 11th innings.

However, in the top of the 12th, the Rays had Logan Forsythe on second with 1 out. Chasen Shreve, dominant of late, came into the game. He walked Asdrubal Cabrera on four pitches and then allowed back to back singles from Kiermaier and Rene Rivera, allowing the Rays to take a 5-3 lead.

Steven Geltz attempted to close out the game for the Rays in the bottom of the 12th but, the Yankees had other ideas. An innocent walk to Gardner and A-Rod single with one out put runners on the corners with one out. Then, Mark Teixeira, hero earlier, put Geltz’s 1-2 pitch into right. 5-4 game. Then, McCann came up. After a first-pitch ball, we heard the famous “there it goes, see ya!” Brian McCann hit Geltz’ 1-0 pitch into the right field stands, and New York won on a walk-off, three-run home run to beat the Rays 7-5.

MY TAKES
The bullpen continues to excel as of late. Besides the 2 runs in the 12th, the Yankees bullpen shut down the Rays in the final stretches of the game and in extra frames. Since Miller will be back soon, the Yankees bullpen seems to be in tip-top shape as he returns.

Alex Rodriguez’s 3000th hit ball - well, it’s back. The Yankees held a press conference today where Zach Hample gave the ball back to A-Rod and he received lots of memorabilia in return.

The Brian McCann home run just might’ve been the biggest moment the Yankees have had all season.

LOOKING FORWARD
The Yankees improve to 43-37 and now have a 1-game lead on the Orioles and 2-game lead on Tampa and Toronto. It’s a day game tomorrow in the Bronx, where first pitch is at 1:05 PM ET. Michael Pineda (8-5, 4.08 ERA) faces Nathan Karns (4-4, 3.26 ERA).

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
