“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” an interview with the Yankees’ 2018 12th round selection, Matt Pita

The MLB draft does not get nearly the coverage or media attention that the drafts in other major sports garner, but with the MLB draft consisting of 40 rounds, the lower picks in the draft typically go unnoticed or unaccounted for by most teams’ fans. However, generational, Hall of Fame talent has surfaced from beyond the tenth round in the MLB draft as names like Nolan Ryan, Albert Pujols, Ryne Sandberg, and John Smotlz were all late-draft choices. While this outcome is rare, it is not unheard of. The Yankees twelfth round selection of this year’s draft, Matt Pita interested me especially.   Photo Credit: Matt Pita

The Yankees fourth round selection is Franklin German, a right-handed pitcher from the University of North Florida. German stands at 6-2, and boasts an impressive curveball to go with a low-90s fastball and an average changeup. As an Osprey, German held a 1.58 ERA, an 8-3 record and a pair of complete games in his 14 starts and 91.1 innings, good enough to earn a First Team Atlantic Sun All-Conference nod, as well as being named conference pitcher of the week twice.  Photo Credit: Hero Sports German was born in Queens, N.Y. on September 22, 1997, so he is no stranger to the bright lights of New York City. The Bombers are no stranger to talented pitching prospects, and it looks like they’ve added another one in German.   Article by: Gus Wetekamp Follow @gus_wetekamp_23 Follow @BronxBomberBall

Seigler was ranked 46th overall by MLB.com and hit .429 with 13 HR and 16 SB as a senior in high school. As a switch-pitcher, not a typo,   he accumulated a 1.09 ERA over 25.2 innings and had a 29:4 K:BB. Two keys for the Yankees' approach to the 2018 draft

Image
The Yankees come into draft day with an already top tier farm system in the majors and a plethora of recently graduated prospects performing well in the game’s highest level. Combine this with their talent at the lower levels of the farm system, their knack for acquiring top international talent, and their wealth, and the Yankees are pretty well off franchise. With that being said, the Yankees do not need to absolutely knock it out of the park in this year’s draft as their future would not be jeopardized if a few of the team’s top picks don’t pan out. Here are two things the Yankees should take into account when they approach this year’s draft:   Photo Credit: Getty Images
