BREAKING: Hicks, Yankees agree to a 7-year, $70 million extension

This morning it was announced that Aaron Hicks and the Yankees have agreed to a seven-year, $70 million extension. The deal was first announced by Jack Curry of the YES Network.  Hicks had previously agreed to a one-year deal of $6 million to avoid arbitration, but this new deal will begin this season, per Bryan Hoch.

Hicks is coming off arguably his best season where he was able to stay healthy (he has had some issues with this in the past) and in 137 games was able to slash .248/.366/.467 with 27 home runs. He has also cemented himself as an elite defender over the last three years in the Bronx, since being acquired from the Twins for the low price of then-backup catcher John Ryan Murphy.

For his tenure in Pinstripes, Hicks has combined to hit .244 with 50 homers, 150 RBIs. While the numbers don’t jump off the page for a three-year period, Hicks had a slow first year after being acquired, and has come on in his last two years. His elite defense was the main draw in acquiring him from Minnesota, with the thought that the bat would catch up, and we are starting to see that now. His switch-hitting bat has also provided the Yankees with more balance in their lineup. After signing this deal, the Yankees see Aaron as the centerfielder of the future, and the future seems to be looking bright.
