CC Sabathia to retire following 2019 season
After wrapping up his 19th big
league season later this year, CC Sabathia will call it a career.
While this shouldn’t come as a
surprise, it confirms the nearing conclusion of a fantastic career
for the Yankees’ former ace.
Sabathia has made it known on multiple occasions that this will be
it for him, notably on an edition
of R2C2, his podcast with Yankees announcer Ryan Ruocco,
earlier this offseason.

Sabathia signed with the Yankees
during the 2008 offseason following an absurd stretch run with
the Brewers, during which he
pitched to a 1.65 ERA with 7 (!) complete games over 17 starts. In
his first year with New York, he
led the Yanks to a World Series championship with a 1.98
postseason ERA, being named ALCS
MVP. He won the AL Cy Young Award with Cleveland in
2007 and is a six-time All Star.

The big left-hander has reinvented
himself over the past three campaigns, pitching to a 3.76 ERA
while relying more on ‘finesse’ and
making outs rather than flat-out overpowering hitters,
something he became known for
earlier in his career.
CC quietly underwent an angioplasty
in December, a major cause for concern, in addition to
arthroscopic knee surgery for a
third consecutive year. Aaron Boone said on Wednesday that his
recovery is going well and that he
will be brought along slowly this spring.
Sabathia is sitting on 246 career
wins and 2,986 strikeouts - within striking distance of some of
baseball’s biggest achievements.
Only 47 pitchers in MLB history have reached 250 wins, and a
mere 16 have K’d 3,000. Once
eligible in 2025, he will bring an interesting case to Cooperstown,
one likely to result in eventual
enshrinement.
CC has been a fan favorite since he arrived as well as a rock in the clubhouse for his leadership and the way he stands up for his teammates. Fans and teammates alike will now be given the chance to salute a great Yankee as he makes his way through his final season.
