Yankees make another trade and other September 1st roster notes

Following their victory against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, the Yankees announced a minor trade in the wee hours of Saturday morning. With several minor leaguers likely to join the big club in the coming days, the Yankees further bolstered their depth by acquiring SS Adeiny Hechavarria from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room for Hechavarria on the 40-man roster, LHP Ryan Bollinger was designated for assignment. The Yankees have been stretched thin due to injuries in recent weeks and Hechavarria will give the team an experienced big leaguer to add to their bench.

His hitting is nothing to write home about but he’s not a complete give up either, posting a .254 average with four homers and 29 RBI in 284 plate appearances for 2018 so far. His real value comes on defense however. The Yankees have been shaky at times in the field this year and Hechavarria is a stellar defender, having made just three errors in 76 games this year. He will probably make some appearances as a late game defensive replacement down the stretch. It's unclear right now whether this trade was completed by the midnight eastern deadline for postseason eligibility. 

 In addition, Jack Curry of the YES Network reported late last night the first wave of September call-ups.  The list includes INF/OF Tyler Wade, RHP Luis Cessa, and LHP Stephen Tarpley who split time between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.  The Yankees will need to make an additional move over the next week if and when they would like to call up Justus Sheffield as he is still currently not on the team's 40-man roster. It's possible Shane Robinson could be the man to pay that price.



The Yankees' roster will further be bolstered today by the return of Gary Sanchez as well as the presumable debut of recent trade acquisition Andrew McCutchen.  With Didi Gregorius on track to return as well in the coming days and Aaron Judge on the mend, the team is finally rounding into shape as the playoffs near.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
