Yankees give up TEN straight runs, lose to Twins 10-5
Well, Didi tried. Didi Gregorius tried to win the game today. The Yankee shortstop had himself a terrific day, going 2-for-3 with one walk, two runs scored, and four RBIs thanks to a sixth inning grand slam which came in vein, as the rest of the offense only totaled three hits (two by Andujar and one by McCutchen), and the pitching combined for 10 runs on a night where Sonny Gray got the spot start.
The Yankees first run came in the second inning when, following a one-out triple by Didi, Gary Sanchez knocked him in with a sac fly to left to give the Yankees an early 1-0 lead.
That lead would not last very long, as two very poor nights by Sonny Gray (36 strikes: 27 balls) and Jonathan Loaisiga (26 strikes: 21 balls) resulted in a 10-0 stretch by the Twins from the third inning to the fifth that included five walks, culminating in a grand slam by Joe Mauer off of Tommy Kahnle in the fifth. All in all, Gray gave up three runs (two earned), Loaisiga gave up six, and Kahnle gave up the Mauer run of the grand slam.
The Yankees immediately responded in the top of the sixth inning, however, with a grand slam of their own. McCutchen started the inning off with a walk, and was then out at second on a fielders’ choice hit by Hicks who replaced Cutch at first base. A Miguel Andujar single and Giancarlo Stanton walk brought up Didi Gregorius who unloaded the four-run blast to deep right field and cut the Twins’ lead to 10-5.
The Yankee offense failed to make it any more interesting from there. Three scoreless innings later and the Twins got the 10-5 win. While the pitching garners much of the blame after giving up 10 runs, the offense hadn’t done much through the top of the fifth while they were only down 4-1. The team overall had only five hits, with only three batters registering hits, as Didi and Miggy both registered two. The game as a whole was pretty tough to watch, especially with the A’s having won today in Baltimore to close the gap to just two. Hopefully the team wakes up tomorrow and realizes that they’re in a wild card race.
