Breaking: Joe Girardi out as Yankee Manager
As reported by ESPN this morning and now confirmed by the Yankees, Joe Girardi will not return as the manager of the New York Yankees. The former catcher had a 910-710 regular season record with the club, as well as a 28-24 postseason record, and winning a World Series in 2009. The longtime manager had a successful tenure with the club, and this year was no different, 91-71 record and reaching game seven of the ALCS against the Houston Astros.
Joe Heyman reports that there was a disconnect between the club and the former skipper, saying there has been tension between Joe and the front office for a while now. Girardi was seen at Yankee Stadium for about an hour on Tuesday and Wednesday, most likely discussing his future with management. There were rumors that Girardi's emotional tone throughout the offseason hinted that this was his last run in New York, likely by his retirement. However, it is now clear that the team thinks they could upgrade at manager, and that Joe's services were no longer needed. Reports also say that GM Brian Cashman will return as general manager.
Joe leaves as one of the more successful managers in the MLB and will be a sought-after candidate throughout the league if he decides to keep coaching. The Yankees should have little problem finding enough candidates for the job, as the Yankees are one of the more exciting young teams in the MLB, with plenty of salary maneuverability and a stacked farm system. There are no current favorites to replace Girardi, but his replacement will have big shoes to fill.
