BREAKING: Yankees trade Luke Voit to San Diego; acquire prospect Lange

Minutes before the Yankees took the field for their first spring training game, Brian Cashman struck a trade that, at this point, became inevitable. Luke Voit is headed to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Justin Lange. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman was first with the news.

Voit became expendable after the Yankees re-signed Anthony Rizzo to a two-year, $32 million deal late Tuesday night, so it was only a matter of time before a move came to fruition. This brings an end to Voit’s tenure in the Bronx that few could’ve predicted just a year ago, after he led the league in home runs (22) and finished ninth in AL MVP voting during the shortened 2020 season. 2021, however, was not as kind to the Missouri product, as he battled a multitude of injuries and a loss of playing time down the stretch en route to a .239/.328/.437 slash. With the National League adopting the designated hitter as part of baseball’s new collective bargaining agreement, the door is open for players like Voit to reclaim impact roles across the league.

Lange is an intriguing return for the Yankees here. He was the Padres first-round pick in 2020 and ranked as the #8 prospect in their system, the second pitching prospect behind only MacKenzie Gore. He struggled mightily with control in his affiliated debut last season, walking 15 in 22 innings, but what’s worth noting is he’s still just 20 years old. He totes a 65-grade fastball, and scouts have noted he has a “huge ceiling but will need time to reach it.” Lange’s development will be worth watching in the years to come as he progresses through the Yanks’ system.

After coming over from the Cardinals as a mere afterthought in 2018, Voit's contributions to the team both on and off the field will not be forgotten for some time. Though the writing has been on the wall for some time now, it’s a bittersweet farewell for one of the most beloved Bombers in recent memory.
