Injuries to look at heading into the ALDS

Just like that, the 2019 New York Yankees regular season has come to an end. The Bombers finished with a 103-59 regular-season record, being one of four teams to end the season with more than 100 wins for the first time in MLB history. Calling this season a rollercoaster would be an understatement. It seemed like another name was hitting the IL at every corner that was turned. The Yankees lead the league in both the number of different players that spent time on the injured list (30) and lead by almost 600 in total days spent on the injured list with 2,614. But, ironically, the Yanks head into the postseason looking about as healthy as they have throughout the duration of the season with just a couple names to keep an eye on.

Edwin Encarnacion
Let’s begin with probably the most concerning of the injuries looming over the team. Edwin hasn’t played since September 12 when he injured his left oblique on a home run swing. Cashman said “we’re optimistic” about a healthy Encarnacion to be ready for Game one of the ALDS. The 36-year-old got a couple at-bats on Tuesday and Wednesday and has been named to the division series roster as of Aaron Boone's Thursday afternoon update.

James Paxton
James Paxton exited his final regular-season start on September 27 after throwing just 21 pitches through one inning. Paxton went back to the dugout and informed Aaron Boone that he felt discomfort in his left glute. Paxton was diagnosed with nerve irritation, but has been named the game one starter by Aaron Boone. 

Gio Urshela
After leaving the final regular-season game in the fourth inning, doctors came back to say that Urshela was suffering from a mild left ankle sprain on a jumping throw. However, when Boone was asked if there was a chance that Gio would miss the first game of the postseason, he quickly replied with “no way.” Boone said if the injury didn’t occur in a meaningless, final game of the season that Gio would have most likely stayed in. Urshela looks to be ready for Friday’s game as well.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George. No team in baseball history has a story quite like the Yankees. 27 times they’ve found baseball Nirvana which is 16 more than the next closest team (Cardinals). 40 times have the Yankees won the American League, and that is also a major league record.
