Yankees claim Cory Gearrin, release Domingo Acevedo
The Yankees continued their efforts to bolster the bullpen Friday afternoon, claiming right-hander Cory Gearrin from the Seattle Mariners. To make room on the 40-man roster, Domingo Acevedo was released. Gearrin becomes the latest addition to the depth chart – the Yankees have added relievers Trevor Rosenthal, David Hernandez, Ryan Dull, and Joe Mantiply this month alone.

Gearrin is in the midst of a
run-of-the-mill campaign, pitching to a 3.92 ERA with 39 strikeouts over 41.1
innings. He’s been a reliable pen piece for the better part of the decade,
carrying a 3.59 ERA through eight big league seasons. In 2017, he threw 68
innings of 1.99 ERA/215 ERA+ ball out of the Giants’ pen.
It’s a bit of a
surprise to see the organization simply release Acevedo; the 6’7” right-hander
came in as the Yanks’ #4 prospect just last year. Although scouts doubted he’d
stick as a starter, his ability to place his pitches had been praised and he’d
been thought to have value as a potential late-inning weapon. While he did crack
Triple-A for the first time earlier this year, he posted an uninspiring 5.40
ERA in 16.2 relief innings and landed on the IL with tricep tightness on
August 8.
