Six players the Yankees could add when rosters expand on September 1
As
the Yankees head down the final stretch of the regular season they will look to
their minor league system for reinforcements to help them close out the year.
They could activate up to 40 players but most likely will only call up a couple
of guys. Here is a list of some of the players who could get the call:
Clint Frazier: The time has come for Frazier to
finally return to the Yankees. He has spent most of the season in the minors
after struggling defensively but his bat will help the Yankees close out the
season. In 53 major league games this year Frazier slashed .283/.330/.513.
Frazier could get at bats at DH while the Yankees wait for the return of Luke
Voit, Giancarlo Stanton, and Edwin Encarnacion.

Kyle Higashioka: Higashioka is basically a lock to be
added to the active roster. As the third catcher he’ll give Aaron Boone more
flexibility while also making it easier for the Yankees to give Gary Sanchez
some rest before the postseason. Higashioka has been solid in his time in the
Bronx this season, owning a respectable .840 OPS and 105 wRC+.
Terrance Gore: The Yankees acquired Terrance Gore back
on July 17th solely based on his ability to run the bases. Gore has stolen 40
bases in 49 attempts in his major league career and will give Boone an option
off the bench to run the bases late in close games. If Gore does this well in
September, he could wind up on the postseason roster as a baserunner.
Deivi Garcia: Garcia
has had quite the year in 2019, soaring through the Yankees farm system,
appearing in the futures game, and becoming the team’s top prospects. After
starting all season, Garcia was recently moved to the bullpen in AAA. This
could be foreshadowing of the Yankees’ plan to get him in the Bronx in 2019. He
won’t be starting any games for the Yanks this season but if he gets called up
and pitches well out of the bullpen he could potentially steal a postseason
spot from a reliever like Luis Cessa.

Mike King: Many thought King had a chance to make
the team out of spring training, but an injury derailed most of his season. He
finally returned to the mound in July and is now stretched out and appears to
be fully healthy. In his last start he went 6.2 innings allowing just two runs
while striking out 11. He also set a new season high with 99 pitches. King
could be an option as a long reliever in September, as New York will look to
keep their top relievers fresh for the postseason.
Jordan Montgomery: Montgomery is a guy who will certainly
be added to the mix at some point, if he is healthy. He’s been recovering from
Tommy John surgery since last June but finally got back on the mound Sunday,
tossing two perfect innings with two strikeouts in a rehab start with High-A
Tampa. Montgomery will certainly need more rehab appearances before rejoining
the Yankees, but he could be a valuable player at some point this season.
