Yankees, Zach Britton in agreement on contract extension

Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic/MLB Network and Jeff Passan of ESPN last night, the Yankees have come to terms with LHP Zach Britton on a new contract that will keep the lefty in the Bronx for at minimum two season.  The contract has a base of three years, $39 million guaranteed, however, after year two the Yankees have an option in which they can extend the deal to a fourth year.  If the Yankees decline the option, Britton can then opt out and hit free agency after the second year.  If neither team enacts their respective options, the deal will be for three season. 


Britton was acquired at the MLB non-waiver trade deadline last summer for a trio of prospects headlined by RHP Dillon Tate.  In 25 games with the Yankees last season, Britton went 1-0 with a 2.88 ERA and three saves.  He began the season on the DL recovering from an ugly offseason Achilles tear.

Britton will rejoin the Yankees bullpen as a key cog in manager Aaron Boone’s bullpen.  He was said to be seeking closer money this Winter, even if he found himself in another role, and at $13 million annually, that’s exactly what he got.  The Yankees are still in on free agent reliever Adam Ottavino as well, but for now, the trio of Britton, Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman will be the guys entrusted to maintain late-game leads in 2019.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
