Yankees showing interested in Arizona shortstop Nick Ahmed

With Didi Gregorius set to miss the first month of the Yankees season with a shoulder injury, the Yankees starting shortstop on Opening Day is suddenly open for competition. While it has been reported that the Yankees are going consider internal options first, it also makes sense that Brian Cashman would look at the availability of shortstops on the trade market. As Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports, the Yankees have recently shown interest in defensive stud Nick Ahmed.

Although the Yankees have several internal options such as Ronald Torreyes, Ruben Tejada, Pete Kozma, Donovan Solano, Tyler Wade, and even Starlin Castro if he can switch back to shortstop opening a spot at second base for Rob Refsnyder for a month, the Yankees interest in Ahmed is logical.

Ahmed hit just .218 in 2016 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 90 games. With unimpressive numbers, the Yankees could likely get Ahmed at a cheap price on the trade market. The Yankees join the Rays, Cardinals, and Padres in their interest for Ahmed, with all of these teams having a need for a middle infielder as they have fewer internal options.

 While Arizona is looking to trade Ahmed due to their surplus of middle infielders in Daniel Descalso, Ketel Marte, Chris Owings, and Brandon Drury, I’d be willing to bet that such a trade to the Yankees is unlikely, but this latest rumor is an interesting thought.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
