Who should fill the shoes of Derek Jeter

By: Gerard Torsiello

There will never be another Derek Jeter. He brought leadership, a great work ethic, and class, mixed with extraordinary talent, but all good things must come to an end. The reality is Jeter is gone after 20 remarkable years, and now the Yankees start the search for the right man to fill his shoes. Who will be the next New York Yankees shortstop?

Let's take a deeper look at some of the candidates.
Asdrubal Cabera played last season with the Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals. Last season he hit .241, 14 HR, 61 RBI. He is a solid opinion for the Yanks, and is 29 years old, but is not a great defensive player. Although he is versatile, seeing some time at 2B last year.

There has been a lot of buzz lately of the possibility of the Yankees trading for 26 year old Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus. He has struggled offensively over the past 2 seasons, hitting .263, and 41 RBI, with only 2 HR last season. If the Yankees where to trade for Andrus they would also have to take on a big contract, but spending money is nothing new to them as we all know. The upside of Elvis Andrus is he plays very good defense and only being 26 there is time for him to develop a better offense as he enters his prime.

In my opinion, trading for Cubs SS Starlin Castro is the best move long term. The 24 year old stud hit .292, 65 RBI, 14 HR. He is under contract until 2019 with a club option for 2020, which would secure the Yankees shortstop position for a while. The only question is do the Yanks have enough young talent to be able to trade for a player of Castro's caliber, and are they willing to trade the young players?
