Roster Update

By: Matthew Kinahan

The 27 year old Zelous Wheeler has been sold to the Rakuten Golden Eagles, a professional team in Japan. The Yankees said they have no interest in the young infielder and don't think he will help the team out in the long run.

The 27 year old played 29 games with the Yankees in 2014. He hit .193 with two homers in 57 at-bats. During his years in the minors Wheeler hit .296 and had a On-Base-Percentage of .834 and in 82 games hit 9 home runs for his team. His first major league hit was a home run for the Yankees in the 2014 season.  Wheeler spent 8 years in the minor leagues and made his debut year, this year with the New York Yankees; unfortunately the Yankees found no interest in Wheeler and his contract was sold.

With Brendan Ryan serving as the backup/utility role, the Yankees showed no interest in Wheeler and that is why they decided to sell him of to Japan.

Other roster moves include outfielders Tyler Austin and Mason Williams and relievers Danny Burawa and Branden Pinder being added to the Yankees 40 man roster. Austin (21) has quickly become a prospect to watch as the Yankees have added him to the 40 man roster as he is as the Yankees 15th best prospect according to mlb.com. The 23 year old spent this season on the Trenton Thunder, which is the double A team for the Yankees. There Austin hit .275 and nine homers and 47 runs batted in. He went on to hit .336 after the All-Star Break.
