The Next Yankee Shortstop

By: Eric Vanemon

With the retiring of Derek Jeter, the biggest whole in the Yankee lineup is without a doubt shortstop. It will definitely be odd not seeing the Captian at short but who exactly will we see there in 2015?
We have Brendan Ryan who I don't see being the starter but rather a backup infielder. There is also the option of signing Stephen Drew back to start but that's not exactly the ideal situation.

It seems like a lot of people want to see Troy Tulowitzki take the role, however how much would the Yankees need to trade to get him? Would the price be right? Luckily there are other options.

Asdrubal Cabrera is a free agent. Coming off a season with a .241 batting average with 14 home runs, he may just be the best option. With 9 of his 14 home runs coming as an Indian (before being traded to the Nationals) he could probably take advantage of the small Yankee ball park. Though for the righty to use this to benefit him, he would have to sharply pull a ball of hit some opposite field bombs. There is of course some worry as he batted .229 after being traded to the Nationals as he was possibly affected by seeing all new pitchers.

But, if Cabrera isn't the guy the Yankees are looking for there is Starlin Castro who may be available for trade. Castro is a career .284 hitter coming off a season where he hit .292 with 12 home runs and 65 RBI’s. Being that the Cubs have quite a few solid infield prospects, Castro could very well find himself dawning Yankee pinstripes next season.

Any way you look at it, it's tough to tell just who it will be. Regardless, we are in for some serious excitement during this offseason!
