Yankees finally complete series vs. Angels with 2-1 victory in Cole's return

The Yankees finally wrapped up their home series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Monday night, evening the season series at two games apiece with a 2-1 victory.  The Yankees continued to struggle at the plate on Monday night, but a two-run first inning home run off the bat of Joey Gallo was all the offense required in this one.

Gerrit Cole returned from the COVID-19 Injured List and was stellar over 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits, one walk, and striking out nine.  A first inning solo home run by Justin Upton was the only damage against Cole the Angels could muster.  The bullpen put the game away from there, with Zack Britton recording the final out in the sixth before Albert Abreu got five big outs bridging the seventh and eighth innings. Joely Rodriguez recorded the final out of the eighth and then Chad Green locked down his fourth save of the season in the ninth.

The Yankees continue to excel in one and two run games, despite the recent struggles closing out games from basically the entire bullpen as well as the continued struggles hitting with runners in scoring position.

What’s Next?:

The Yankees kick off a crucial three-game series against the Boston Red Sox starting with tomorrow’s double header.  Jordan Montgomery will get the ball in the first game, fresh off the COVID-19 IL himself, and then the Yankees will call up Luis Gil as tomorrow’s 27th-man for the second game. Montgomery has been steady as they come this season, but will be pitching for the first time in 16 days. Gil has been stellar in his first two big league starts but will get his first taste of the Rivalry tomorrow.

The Yankees will enter tomorrow’s game just two games behind Boston for the top Wild Card spot (and only one behind Oakland for the second) so there’s opportunity here to further cut into that lead this week. Taking two of three at the minimum is a necessity.
