Series Recap: Yankees take two of three from Nats

The Yankees wrapped up their nine-game homestand this weekend taking two of three from the Washington Nationals, finishing the homestand 7-2 overall.  Both of the Yankees’ wins came in walk-off fashion, following an ugly loss on Friday night in the series’ first game.  The Yankees will hit the road at 18-16, in second place in the AL East, 3.5 games back of Boston.

Game 1: Nationals 11, Yankees 4

Game 3: Yankees 3, Nationals 2

Despite Friday night’s lopsided final score, this one was actually a pretty good pitchers duel until the Yankee bullpen unraveled late.  Jameson Taillon got the start for New York, opposed by Patrick Corbin, and both pitchers contributed quality starts.  Jonathan Loaisiga got tagged hard for the Yankees in the 8th, and a three-error inning spelled their doom on this night.

 

On Saturday, the Yankees were absolutely shut down for eight innings by three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer but rallied late to tie the game in the ninth before walking it off in the 11th.  Corey Kluber started for the Yankees and looked good again, his third straight strong start, but was on the hook for a tough-luck loss had the Yankees not rallied against Washington closer Brad Hand in the ninth inning.  Both teams scored runs in the 10th inning, pushing this game to the eleventh, but the Yankees were able to prevail after Justin Wilson pitched a scoreless top of the inning and then the Yankees loaded the bases for Gleyber Torres who played the hero on this day.


Sunday’s finale followed a similar game arc, only this time it was Washington tying the ballgame late after Domingo German had cruised into the seventh inning before allowing a run. Kyle Schwarber ripped one into the second deck in right to tie the game at two, but the New York bullpen was stout the rest of the way in relief of German, allowing the Yankees to eventually push across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

 

What’s Next?:

The Yankees are off today, Monday May 10th, and will travel to Tampa Bay for another series against the heated rival Rays.  The Rays are sitting around .500 as are the Yankees but have had New York’s number all season.  This would be the perfect opportunity for Aaron Boone’s crew to solve the Tampa Bay riddle and start putting wins on the board against a division rival they figure to be fighting for a division crown with until the end of the season.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
