BREAKING: Yankees re-sign DJ LeMahieu to new six year, $90 million deal

Early this morning, MLB Network insider Jon Morosi broke the news that the Yankees were in advanced stages with 2B DJ LeMahieu on a contract to bring the reigning AL Batting Champ back to the Bronx. Pat Ragazzo was the first to report the contract details.


Negotiations with DJ have dragged out longer than most Yankees fans would have liked this Winter, with the Yankees in a firm standoff with their second baseman over number of years as well as total contract value, but it appears the two sides have finally come to an agreement.  Ragazzo later reported that DJ had offers of four years/$60 million from the Dodgers and four years/$78 million from the Blue Jays and that DJ was actually pretty close to going to Toronto which would have been a crippling blow to the Yankees. Ultimately, however, the six year pact and $90 million total contract value was enough for DJ to sign on to finish his career in the Bronx, seemingly the only place he ever wanted to play again.

In two seasons in pinstripes, LeMahieu has been a complete revelation for the Bombers after originally signing a bargain 2 year, $24 million deal ahead of the 2019 season.  LeMahieu has finished fourth and third, respectively, in the last two AL MVP votings to go along with his 2020 AL batting title.  In 2020, LeMahieu also led the American League in on-base percentage (.421), OPS (1.011) and OPS+ (177).  He has earned the Silver Slugger award for best hitting second baseman each of the last two years.


With the Yankees retaining DJ, their infield is set for 2021, exactly how it finished up 2020, with Gio Urshela at third, Gleyber Torres at shortstop, LeMahieu at second and Luke Voit at first.  Now, the Yankees will turn their attention to contracts with their eight arbitration-eligible players as well as the pitching, which is still a huge question mark heading into the season.  LeMahieu's $15 million AAV greatly assists both of those causes, however, as the Yankees seek to stay under the luxury tax threshold for 2021.
