Gio Urshela undergoes surgery to remove bone spur

On Friday, the Yankees announced that everyone's favorite third baseman, Gio Urshela, required surgery to remove a bone spur.  The spur was reported to have bothered Urshela through the end of the 2020 season, according to the New York Post. 

A three-month recovery period puts Urshela on track to be healed just in time for Opening Day; however, according to the New York Daily News, Urshela will miss "some of Spring Training."  It is difficult to be optimistic about the fact that the 2021 season has not even begun, and Yankees are already injured, but Gio is expected to be ready by opening day.

A 2020 Gold Glove Finalist, it almost goes without saying that Urshela played an integral role in the 2020 postseason, both in the field and at the plate.  His grand slam in the AL Wild Card series, as well as several fielding plays in which Urshela quite literally pulled the ball out of his ass to throw it, will go down as highlight reel favorites. 

Urshela himself posted about the surgery on his Instagram Saturday night.  

An important piece of this metaphorical puzzle to consider is what Urshela's recovery means for Miguel Andjujar, who did not make the 2020 postseason roster and was sent to the alternate site at the end of September (presumably to make sure there was enough room for Urshela).  In 21 game appearances in 2020, Andujar went 15-for-62, with a .242 BA/1 HR/5 RBI/9 K.  However, it is no secret to anyone surrounding the Yankees that his play in the field leaves a bit to be desired. 

While the news is good that Urshela is slated to be ready for Opening Day 2021, it is still concerning, especially on the heels of the 2020 postseason.
