BREAKING: Yankees Minor Leaguer Tests Positive for COVID-19

Per reports from Jeff Passan and several other outlets, the Yankees are the first MLB team to report a case of coronavirus within its system.

This news comes on the heels of MLB’s decision to suspend spring training games and postpone the opening of the 2020 regular season by at least two weeks, as well as end team workouts until further notice.

The player is reported as an unidentified minor league player, whose name was not released to the public in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.  The player did not have any direct contact with any of the Major League Yankees squad during workouts or spring training games.  The Yankees minor league spring training is located approximately one mile south of Steinbrenner Field.

In terms of what this news will mean for the start of the Yankees’ regular season and the MLB regular season as a whole, it is difficult to predict until MLB announces further mandates or restrictions.  If and when the name of the player is announced, that will be the time when guesses can be made as to how the Yankees’ Major League roster will be affected. This will likely effect for more than one minor leaguer for any team before its all said and done.
