Yankees sign Luis Avilan to minors deal

The Yankees have signed left-handed reliever Luis Avilan to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.  Avilan, who has spent his entire eight-year career as a reliever, will compete for a spot in the Yankees bullpen.

The 30-year old spent his 2019 season in the dumpster fire that was the Mets’ bullpen - and did his part to contribute to said dumpster fire.  Avilan had the worst season of his career, posting career highs in ERA (5.06), FIP (4.96) and HR/9 (1.41).  However, the Yankees may see this as simply a fluke due to the spike in home runs hit in 2019, as his 8.4 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 2019 were right in line with his career averages.  Right-handed hitters were his downfall, as they carried a .373/.460/.587 slash line against him.  On the contrary, Avilan dominated lefties, who slashed just a paltry .102/.185/.184 against him.  

Since he is only 30 years old, there is definitely some hope that Avilan can revert back to his 2012-2018 numbers, which were actually quite good. In that time span, playing for the Braves, Dodgers, White Sox, and Phillies, Avilan was as steady as they come, posting a 3.09 ERA, 3.25 FIP, 3.44 BB/9, and a sparkling 0.44 HR/9 in 308.2 innings pitched.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
