The trade came after the announcement last week that the Yankees had designated Cortes for assignment, leaving open a roster spot ahead of the upcoming winter meetings.

As a result, the Yankees’ international signing bonus pool total has increased to $5,835,800.00.  The Mariners have now spent their entire $5.37 million pool.  The Yankees have used a great deal of their pool already, to the sum of $5,762,000.00 in the signings of Jasson Dominguez, Enger Castellano and Manuel Palencia.

In response to the news, Yankee fan @KyleNYY found that this hot take from September 2 aged well, and hit retweet today.

On the 2019 season, Cortes made 32 relief appearances, one start, logged a 5.67 ERA and a 5-1 record.  He did not earn a spot on the postseason roster.
