Are Brett Gardner’s days in the Bronx numbered?
With
the Major League Baseball offseason in full swing, teams are making moves to
either help bolster their rosters for the upcoming season or stock up on on
prospects for the future. So far this offseason, the Yankees have taken an
approach pretty much right in the middle of the two. The Yanks are at an in-between period right now having a lot of talented young players on the roster
as well as some veterans. After signing closer Aroldis Chapman and designated
hitter Matt Holliday, you would think they will not be adding any more
veterans. The question is, how many veterans does Brian Cashman want on the
Opening Day roster? One veteran that comes to mind as a player the Yankees
could look to move is outfielder Brett Gardner.
Gardner
has been on the Yankees for his whole eight-year baseball career. He is owed $13-million each year for his services with two years remaining on his current
deal. Cashman might look to trade the veteran outfielder because of the current
market for players of his caliber.
Recently, the Chicago White Sox sent 28-year old outfielder, Adam Eaton, to the Washington Nationals for top prospect, Lucas Giolito, who ESPN’s Keith Law says is the MLB’s second overall prospect and two additional high ranked prospects in the Nationals farm system (RHPs Reynaldo Lopez and Dane Dunning). If the Chicago White Sox were able to receive this loaded package in return from the Nationals there is no reason why the Yankees can not get at least half of that in return for Brett Gardner.

Although
Eaton is five years younger then Gardner, Brett could be very useful a team
that is in a win now mentality as a very reliable outfielder as a guy who gets on base at the top of the lineup. Bryan Hoch recently reported Cashman saying, “The heavy lifting is done unless I trade (Brett) Gardner.” So as of
now, if sounds like unless Cashman is blown away by an offer, he is not going to
go out of his way to deal him. But if he can get even half of what White Sox got
for Eaton, he should strongly consider it.
