Brendan Ryan Called Up, Ramon Flores Sent Down
After
a long time coming, Yankees veteran shortstop Brendan Ryan has been called up
after finishing his rehab stint. In the corresponding roster move, the Yankees
have optioned rookie OF Ramon Flores back to triple-A.
Before
going 3-4 at the plate last night, Flores was only hitting .182 in eight games.
What doesn’t appear in the box score was his exceptional defensive ability with 2
outfield assists – one coming in his major league debut – and multiple diving
plays in left field. Last night, Flores collected two hits off Nationals ace
Max Scherzer going 3-4 on the night to raise his batting average to .269. Overall,
Flores went 7-26 with 1 double in 9 games.
Brendan
Ryan finished his 7 game minor league rehab stint hitting .273 in 7 games with
the Tampa Yankees, Trenton Thunder and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders. Ryan
hit 2 doubles in 22 at bats and played strong defensively as he typically does. Ryan walked into the clubhouse unaware that the Stache Squad was no more as he sported his mustache. I'd expect it to be gone by game time this afternoon. The Yankees will look to him to exhibit his plus fielding ability as a middle
infielder.
THE SPIN
Optioning
Ramon Flores may have been relatively surprising given his three hits last
night but it does bring the possibility that either Slade Heathcott or Jacoby
Ellsbury – or both – are close to returning. Heathcott outhit Flores in both of
their brief stints with the big league club and the Yankees are trying to get a
healthy Ellsbury back as soon as possible.
With
Stephen Drew’s recent power surge (.606 slugging over his last 10 games), his
spot on the Yankees is safe – for now. If Jose Pirela continues to outplay him
and outplays Ryan (which I expect him to do), Drew’s spot on the 25-man roster
may be in jeopardy upon the return of Ellsbury or Heathcott.
