With less than one week until the July 31 trade deadline, the Yankees have already made possibly their only big move acquiring relievers David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle as well as third baseman Todd Frazier in a seven-player deal with the Chicago White Sox. In one deal, Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman bolstered the bullpen, and added a player to help produce at the corner infield positions. Despite that, one area of need that has yet to be addressed is the starting rotation. The Yankees have been linked to a number of different starters and most notably Sonny Gray. Gray would be a huge addition to this rotation and with his team control through 2019, the Yankees must acquire Gray if they intend on being serious contenders this season. There’s no doubt that the Yankees have been in the market for a front of the rotation arm for a couple of years now. With CC Sabathia’s health issues, Masahiro Tanaka pitching to a five-plus ERA, and Michael Pineda’s inconsistency, the Yankees most consistent starters have been rookie Jordan Montgomery and flamethrower Luis Severino.  However, even Severino has been shaky as of late, and the trade deadline is approaching. Jose Quintana has been a name that has floated around in Yankee land for the past year or so. Well before the start of the 2017 season, the New York Yankees had many questions about their roster. Last season, a major strength of the Yankees was their bullpen. After some late season acquisitions (getting Adam Warren back, and trading for Tyler Clippard) the bullpen seemed to be rounding into form. After winning a World Series with the Cubs, Aroldis Chapman got his wish and resigned with the Yankees. The strength of this team remains the same, if a starter can get to the sixth or better yet the seventh inning, the game should be over. What about the rest of the team? The Yankees this season have a great mix of veteran talent, and youth. Unlike the last couple of seasons which have been tough to watch, through 13 games this team has a different buzz. Veterans such as Jacoby Ellsbury, Matt Holliday and CC Sabathia are showing the kids what it takes to be in the majors, but you have to believe the kids are teaching the vets how to have fun and enjoy the game again. When most Yankees fans envision a trade with the White Sox these days, one name comes to mind: Jose Quintana. Maybe David Robertson as well. However, Brian Cashman has stated that he is not looking to upgrade the rotation, or add payroll (unless the Yankees trade Brett Gardner). This makes trades for both Quintana and Robertson unlikely, no matter how much sense both of them make for the team. I do still feel that the Yankees will add a starter, just no one that noteworthy; someone like Jorge De la Rosa or Brett Anderson on a cheap, one-year deal. However, one area that I feel like the Yankees would definitely upgrade if they got the chance would be the bullpen, and one trade is another White Sox reliever, Nate Jones. Photo Credit: AP Recently, there have been rumors about a potential three-way trade between the Yankees, Pirates, and White Sox, that would send Pittsburgh’s star outfielder Andrew McCutchen to the Yanks, White Sox star pitcher Jose Quintana to the Pirates, and prospects to Chicago. The prospects, specifically, are listed   in a tweet from Brian Bilek, and rumors were also confirmed by Dave Williams of Barstool. Outside of Glasnow, #WhiteSox would receive some combo of Mitch Keller, Blake Rutherford, Kevin Newman, Miguel Andujar & Elias Diaz. — Brian Bilek (@BrianBilek_) December 23, 2016 Many people probably don’t like the idea of trading for McCutchen, especially after his down year in 2016. However, I’m sure there will be a boatload of Yankees fans clamoring for the team to trade from its immense prospect depth and acquire the 2013 National League Most Valuable Player, which is why I will review both sides of the trade.

Now that the Yankees have filled their designated hitter and closer needs through free agency in the form of the soon to be 37-year old Matt Holliday and flamethrowing Aroldis Chapman, respectively, Brian Cashman's focus shifts to filling out the remaining holes in the 2017 Yankees roster. As we sit here in November, the New York Yankees have to be one of the more fascinating teams to keep an eye on. They have oodles of young talent on the cusp of breaking into the majors, some that have already arrived. But most of the recognizable young names in the organization are position players. And although the casual fan is more enamored with how many home runs a player hit, pitching wins games. Let’s take a look at the Yankees rotation and how it breaks down and what they can do to improve it. The Yankees have a lot of good, young talent that could potentially win a rotation spot but they’re missing a few components. The main cog they need is a left-hander. Not just any average lefty, we have that with CC Sabathia. We need a young southpaw that will alleviate some pressure off of Masahiro Tanaka so he doesn’t have to be perfect every time out.
