Weekly Preview: LAA @ NYY 6/28 – 7/1, NYM @ NYY 7/2 – 7/4

 

So… where do the Yankees go from here?

Every time it seems the club gets something going, whether it is winning a series, or getting a couple of comeback wins under their belt, the wheels fall back off the wagon. It is no secret that the Bombers have struggled this season, including many tough losses with just a handful of thrilling wins for this ball club. Following a sweep to the rival Red Sox in Boston, The Yankees sit in fourth place in the American League East with a 40-37 record.

 

The Yankees will have four games in Yankees Stadium against the Los Angeles Angels and two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to start out the week on Monday and head straight into a three-game set against the crosstown rival New York Mets in the Bronx. Though the Angels record doesn’t show it, neither of these teams are ones to overlook, especially with the brand of baseball the Bombers have been playing this season.

Let’s start with Jameson Taillon, who looked, dare I say… serviceable in his previous start against the Kansas City Royals. Granted, let us remember the team we are talking about here, the Kansas City Royals, the below .500 team most likely to sell at the trade deadline, and who is 3-7 in their last 10 games. But, give the man credit where it is due. Taillon looked good through 6.1 innings pitched in his last outing. He struck out 6 while working his way out of a couple of awkward jams in that game. Current Angels are 7-21 against Taillon throughout his career, though only 7 of them have gone to bat against him.

 

Outside of his last three starts, Domingo Germán has had an excellent season thus far. His last three being against Philadelphia, Oakland, and Boston, where he gave up seven, four, and three earned runs in those starts. Two went for 4.0 innings while in the Philadelphia game he went 4.1. Germán has been one of the Yankees more reliable starting pitchers throughout the season and will look to stay on that track in New York. The biggest key for Germán, limit the long ball.

 

Lastly, we come to Jordan Montgomery. With what is becoming to become a common trend when talking about the Yankees starting pitching, they are not the problem. Montgomery has been “constant” thus far. In his 5 starts since June 2, Montgomery has not once failed to make his way into the sixth inning, and in two of those starts getting through six. Out of those 5, Montgomery has given up four earned runs in only one of those appearances, and three or less in the remaining. Montgomery has quite the small sample side against Angels hitters, as he has only faced two who are 3-9 against him.

 

Though we do not know the pitching matchups for the series the Yankees will play against the Mets in the latter part of the week, we do know one thing. Jacob deGrom will most likely take the mound on July 1^st in Atlanta. Excellent news for a Yankees team trying to get back on track this season and find some sort of footing. Bad news, the Yankees will see SP/DH Shohei Ohtani this week. One of those nights on the pitcher’s mound and probably all four at the plate.

 

It’s the same story every week for this Yankees team, this is the week they need to turn things around. They are down 6.5 games in a strong AL East two weeks from the All-Star break, if there is any time to write the ship and turn this thing around, now would be the time after falling yet again to the second-place Red Sox.
