PETITION: Call up Rookie the bat dog for the 2020 season
What a sad day, I won't be retrieving any @TrentonThunder bats this season. I look out on the empty seats and I miss all the fans & the players. I can't wait until me and Dash can go out there and play baseball again. pic.twitter.com/oTqNcXbe8X— Rookie (@BatdogRookie) June 30, 2020
Heartbreaking.
Yesterday, Minor League Baseball President Pat O’Connor announced there will not be a 2020 season. While unsurprising at this stage, it’s an unfortunate development that casts uncertainty upon not only the thousands of hopefuls not included in their respective team’s 60-player pool, but the world of baseball as a whole. With that comes the absolutely devastating realization that Rookie, the beloved bat-retrieving dog of the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate Trenton Thunder, will be out of a job until 2021.

For those unfamiliar with Rookie, bat dogs have been a staple of Thunder baseball since 2002. Rookie carried the legacy into its third generation when he made his debut in 2014; he was preceded by his father Derby (2008-2018) and grandfather Chase (2000-2013). The family has garnered national attention over the last 18 years, appearing on FOX, CNN, and even their own E:60 special on ESPN.
The 2020 MLB season is going to be full of firsts. We’ve known that for some time now. So, why not add another? The dynamic of fans will be sorely missed this year, but Rookie can provide a much needed morale boost and put smiles on the faces of both the players and everyone watching at home while he does what he does best. And if that isn’t convincing enough, it’s constant, national advertisement for the 2021 Trenton Thunder season. I don’t know what the logistics are here, but on the surface it seems like a no-brainer for the Yankees.
We here at Bronx Bomber Ball have created a petition in an attempt to make this a reality -- sign here if you want to see this good boy in the Bronx as much as we do.
