Baseball is back: Synopsis and reactions across Twitter

On the evening of June 23, baseball fans across the country received the news they’d been waiting for since March: Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players’ Association finally reached a deal that would allow baseball to continue in 2020, following agreement on both sides to the new health and safety protocols.

The 2020 season start about July 24, and will run for 60 games. It will include a DH for both the American and National Leagues and any extra innings will start with a runner on second base, in the hopes that games will have shorter running times.

According to USA Today, “To limit travel amid COVID-19, teams will play opponents only within their geographical region – West teams against West, and so on. So, you’ll see plenty of usual interleague rivals – Mets vs. Yankees, Brewers vs. Twins – and a few other spicy matchups.” The postseason will be “business as usual,” with two wild card teams and five teams per league entering the postseason.

While the 2020 season will be far from typical, both some of the Yankees and their commentators alike rejoiced across social media, because even modified baseball is better than no baseball at all. Here are some reactions, so far:
