Yankees leave fourteen runners on base, fail to claw back following Happ’s rough outing

The Yankees came into the rubber game determined to come out of the opening series with a win as Aaron Judge expressed how much these games meant in the long run. However, the Yankees were unable to beat the lowly Orioles for the second consecutive day and drop to 1-2 on the season.

JA Happ did not have his best stuff early on as he surrendered a three-run home run to Renato Nunez in the first inning. The Orioles tacked on their fourth run of the game in the third inning following a Trey Mancini solo home run. Happ only pitched four innings, needing 75 pitches to do so.

Orioles’ starter Dylan Bundy did not have great command today, but was able to pitch three scoreless innings to start the game. The Yankees got to him in the fourth as Brett Gardner worked a bases loaded walk, and Aaron Judge singled in a pair. Other than a Gary Sanchez solo home run in the seventh inning, this was the only scoring the Yankees were able to muster up until the ninth inning.

Luis Cessa kept the Yankees in the game allowing one earned run and striking out five in 3.1 innings of work, but Stephen Tarpley served up a two-run home run in the eighth allowing the Orioles to extend their lead to 7-4.

 The Yankees showed some life in the ninth inning as DJ LeMahieu singled in a run to make it a 7-5 game. With the tying run coming to the plate, Aaron Boone decided to pinch-hit Troy Tulowitzki for Brett Gardner. Tulo struck out to end the game. 

What’s next?

The Yankees will look to rebound from this series on Monday as they welcome in the Tigers. Domingo German will oppose Tyson Ross, and the game will being at 6:35 EST.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
