Yankees announce that Luis Severino will start the Wild Card Game
After
much debate and speculation from fans and writers, the Yankees have officially
announced their ace, Luis Severino, will be starting Wednesday’s American
League Wild Card matchup between New York and Oakland.
This
will be Severino’s second career Wild Card Start, and he will hope this year’s outing fares better after his disastrous performance a year ago against the Twins. Severino
finished 2018 with a 19-8 record and a 3.39 ERA. The two-time All-star had a
solid season overall, but his numbers were severely hampered from an atrocious
second-half of the season where he saw his 2.31 ERA skyrocket as a result of his
5.57 second-half ERA. Severino has demonstrated he can be shutdown with his 220
strikeouts on the season, but apart from a few decent September starts, has not
been a top-of-the-rotation pitcher for the Yankees since early July.
Severino
was likely chosen due to his raw talent and his ability to overpower hitters.
Despite his 6.23 ERA in two starts against the A’s this season and his recent
struggles, the Yankees have decided to go with their ace over their trade
deadline acquisition, JA Happ, or Masahiro Tanaka. If Severino struggles
similarly to last year’s game, expect the Yankees to go to the bullpen fast,
but if he is able to replicate his first-half success, the Yankees have an
extremely great advantage.
