Yankees expressing interest in 15-game winner Jason Hammel

Jason Hammel pitched his way to a very successful campaign for the Chicago Cubs in 2016 going 15-10 with a 3.83 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 30 starts. However, after experiencing elbow tightness late in the season, Hammel was kept off the postseason roster, and soon had his $12 million option declined by the team. With a Yankees rotation that has as many question marks as ever, Hammel is the newest pitcher the Yankees have reportedly been linked to according to George King of the NY Post.


Ever since being traded to the Cubs in 2014, Hammel has enjoyed a resurgence in his career posting ERA’s of 3.47 in 2014, 3.74 in 2015, and 3.83 in 2016, to go along with a 33-22 record in that span. With his success, the Cubs gave Hammel the choice between having the team pick up his option, or decline his option, and with the thin starting pitching market, Hammel chose the latter.

Hammel would join a Yankees rotation of Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, and CC Sabathia, providing nice stability in the middle of that sequence. Though the Yankees have been looking at having reunions with relievers such as Aroldis Chapman and Boone Logan, the Yankees have also been linked to Derek Holland. The club looks as though they intend to improve their starting rotation while also suring up the bullpen. Although Hammel is one of the top pitchers in this weak free agent market, he could come at a relatively cheap price in a two-year deal or so.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
