Rapid Reaction: McCann wins Silver Slugger
It
was announced Thursday evening that Yankee Catcher, Brian McCann won the AL
Silver Slugger award. This is McCann’s 6th silver slugger award and 1st
while playing for the Yankees, as the other 5 came in a Braves uniform. The second half of 2015 wasn’t kind to McCann (or
to the Yankees bats as a whole), but he still finished with 26 home runs and 96
RBIs. His batting average for the second consecutive year ended up being .232. Nevertheless
it was still a productive year for a guy the Yankees invested highly on 2
winters ago. He has certainly been an upgrade over the production guys like
Francisco Cervelli, Austin Romine and Chris Stewart gave the Bombers prior to
the signing.
Surprisingly enough, Brian McCann was snubbed off the All-Star roster. Instead, Salvador Perez of the Royals, Russell Martin of the Blue Jays and Stephen Vogt of the A’s took part on the Midsummer Classic.
McCann
still has 3 years left in his deal. It was once thought that the Yankees would
move him to 1st base after Mark Teixeira’s contract ends (2016 being
the last year). That seems unlikely now with the emergence of Greg Bird and
A-Rod still having 2 years left in his deal.
Now,
McCann will be backed up by a new catcher, Yankee prospect Gary Sanchez, after
the club traded away John Ryan Murphy to the Twins in exchange for OF Aaron
Hicks. Sanchez, has recently put
together tremendous numbers in the Arizona Fall League. Joe Girardi is a huge
believer into keeping players fresh so he will get a good share of playing
time. Moving forward, McCann will continue to be one of the best catchers in
all of baseball and hit in the heart of the Yankee order around Teixeira and
Rodriguez.
