Why Jorge Posada Should Be a Hall of Famer
As we celebrate the
day that Jorge Posada is enshrined into Monument Park, I thought I should
make my case for why Posada should be granted baseball’s highest achievement
and baseball immortality.
A member of the Core
Four, Jorge Posada was a cornerstone of the Yankees franchise for almost two
decades and a fan favorite here in the Bronx. A 5x All Star (2000-2003, 2007)
and 5x Silver Slugger winner (2000-2003, 2007), Posada was also a 4x World
Series champion (1998-2000, 2009) during his 16 year career in pinstripes. As
of now, Posada ranks in the top 20 among all time catchers in at bats (6091),
runs (900), hits (1664), RBIs (1065) as well as 8th in doubles (379),
homers (275) and slugging (.474), 3rd in walks (936) and 6th
in OBP (.374). Not only has he had a productive career in the regular season,
he is one of the most successful players in postseason play as he ranks 2nd
all-time in postseason games played (125), 3rd in postseason at bats
(416), 8th in postseason runs scored (53), 4th in
postseason hits (103), 3rd in postseason doubles (23), 9th
in postseason RBIs (42) and 4th in postseason walks (70). Posada’s
best season by far came in 2003 when he batted .281 with 30 home runs and 101
RBI with a 5.9 WAR in 142 games which was good enough to finish 3rd
in the AL MVP voting.
As Jorge Posada
prepares to have his number retired and his plaque placed in Monument Park, he
becomes eligible for the Hall of Fame this upcoming year as his five year waiting
period will come to an end. Considering Posada is not a top 5 catcher of all
time and looking at the candidates for next year’s Hall of Fame class, which
includes another catcher, Mike Piazza, Posada isn’t primed to be a first ballot
Hall of Famer. Even though Posada’s chances on being elected in his first year
are a long shot, the former Yankee catcher has every bit of credibility to one
day stand among baseball’s greats in Cooperstown.
