Yankees Drop Game One (Recap)

By: Chad Raines

Blue Jays 6 Yankees 1

RECAP----
The Yankees opened up their 2015 campaign against inter-division opponent, the Toronto Blue Jays. Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka lasted just 4 innings allowing 5 runs (4 earned). Tanaka breezed through the first two innings but inning number three was not his best as Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer, his first, off Tanaka. Alex Rodriguez was the first baserunner of the Yankees’ season after walking to lead off the third inning. He then hit a single and was 1-2 on the afternoon with a walk. Brett Gardner hit the Yankees first homer of the season with a solo shot in the 6th. The Yankees threw 7 pitchers today: Tanaka, Chris Martin, Chasen Shreve, David Carpenter, Justin Wilson and Esmil Rogers. With an off-day tomorrow, the Yankees bullpen should be at full force on Wednesday.
MY TAKE----
The main takeaway from this game is that the Yankees offense struggled to have any rhythm whatsoever today. With just three hits (from Brian McCann, Rodriguez, and Gardner), the team is going to have to hit better in order to be successful. Tanaka looked incredibly good through the first two innings (after collecting a few strikeouts and giving up one hit) but his command faltered in the third. Chase Headley made a uncharacteristic error that allowed the Blue Jays their first run then Tanaka served Encarnacion an inside fastball that he took over the wall.  Didi Gregorius made a bone-headed base-running mistake as he was thrown out stealing 3rd base with a runner on first and Mark Teixiera at the plate. Overall, my hopes of an undefeated season of 162-0 have been dashed but if the Yankees bats come around they should be fine. Stay positive and be happy, it’s Opening Day!!

LOOKING FORWARD----
The Yankees will be off on Tuesday, April 7th before returning to action against the Blue Jays. They will have Michael Pineda going on Wednesday  (7:05 game time) and CC Sabathia going on Thusday (7:05 game time). Following the 3-game set, the archrivals from Yawkee Way, the bad guys, the Boston Red Sox will come to town for a weekend series going from Friday to Sunday.
Below I have attached the box score from game 1 on the Yankees season. I have color coded the Blue Jays in a lighter blue and the Yankees in a darker blue, because I love you all.
