Yankees resign Stephen Drew

The Yankees have resigned second basemen Stephen Drew to a one year contract according to CBS Sport’s Jon Heyman. The deal is reported to be worth $5 million dollars and could be as much as $7 million in incentives.

The move is a very interesting one as it now brings questions as to what the Yankees plans are at second base for the season. Initially, there was going to be a battle between Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder for the starting job and it now appears that Drew could be in the mix.

It is likely that the Drew will see the majority of his time at second base but he may get a few spot starts at shortstop. Drew hit just .150 and had a -0.6 WAR in 46 games after being acquired by the Yankees at the trade deadline. The dismal batting average was likely caused by Drew missing the first two months of the season as he was unsigned until late May.

Drew should bounce back a bit in 2015 but we shouldn’t expect too much from him. It is unclear as to what the plans are going forward with Pirela and Refsnyder. I also can’t help but wonder if the resigning of Drew will have any effect on what the Yankees do with Brendan Ryan. However, we likely will not see a Didi Gregorius/Stephen Drew platoon as they are both lefties. The move is truly a head scratcher.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
