In the wake of sought-after free agent pitcher Patrick Corbin signing with the Washington Nationals today, the Yankees need to pivot quickly, and the best option might just come in the form of an old friend.   Photo Credit: Adam Hunger/USA TODAY Sports Nathan Eovaldi, after being acquired by the Boston Red Sox this past Summer, put the entirety of his skillset on display as he was a key cog in the Red Sox’s rotation as they went on to win the World Series.   After being acquired from Tampa Bay at the non-waiver trade deadline in July, Eovaldi went 3-3 in 12 games (11 starts) with a 3.33 ERA.   Where he shined the most, however, was in the postseason. The Yankees are now 22-10 and are only half of a game back of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East standings. The Yankees have proven they are for real and will undoubtedly be in the playoff picture come October, but this does not mean the team is not flawless. Where do teams typically try to patch up the holes on their roster? The Trade Deadline. I know the season is roughly a month and some change away from prime trade talks, but I wanted to do an early preview of the areas of need the Yankees may have and who they might pursue. It is December 2017. The Yankees just landed the best bat on the market, and the fan base was in an uproar, because the evil empire was back. With very little time to breathe and recollect, the Yankees were seemingly on the verge of acquiring Gerrit Cole from the Pirates and improve their already solid rotation. Instead, rumors swirled for what seemed liked months, and Cole eventually saw himself joining the World Series Champion Astros and has been phenomenal for them. There were also rumors that the Yankees had interest in other pitchers on the trade market, such as, Arizona’s Patrick Corbin, but no deal was made, and Corbin pitched a one-hit shutout on Tuesday night for the Diamondbacks.   Photo Credit: AP

Despite acquiring Giancarlo Stanton, a move which makes the Yankees likely the most potent lineup in baseball, the Yankees aren’t finished making moves. Specifically, the Yankees want to compliment their deadly lineup by improving the rotation using the money they just cleared up in the Chase Headley deal earlier this morning which cleared up his $13 million salary and gives the Yankees more breathing room beneath the luxury tax.
